George Gray Leiper was a Jacksonian member of the U.S. House of Representatives Pennsylvania.BiographyGeorge Gray Leiper was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the son of merchant Thomas Leiper. He graduated the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1803. He moved to “Lapidea,” Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1810 and engaged in logging. He also operated bark mills and stone quarries. He served as first lieutenant of the Delaware County Fencibles in 1814 and was called into active service near Brandywine Creek. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1822 and 1823.Leiper was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress. He was the chairman of the United States House Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury during the Twenty-first Congress. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1830. He resumed the management of his quarry properties, and was appointed associate judge of the courts of Delaware County on February 25, 1843. He was reappointed on February 16, 1848, and served until December 1, 1851, when the office became elective. He died at his home, “Lapidea,” on Crum Creek in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1868. Interment in the Ridley Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ridley Township, Pennsylvania.

George Gray Leiper war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker. Während des Britisch-Amerikanischen Krieges wurde er als Mitglied der Miliz des Delaware County zwischenzeitlich in den aktiven Militärdienst berufen. In den 1820er Jahren schloss er sich der Bewegung um den späteren Präsidenten Andrew Jackson an und wurde Mitglied der von diesem 1828 gegründeten Demokratischen Partei. Zwischen 1822 und 1823 war er Abgeordneter im Repräsentantenhaus von Pennsylvania.Bei den Kongresswahlen des Jahres 1828 wurde Leiper im vierten Wahlbezirk von Pennsylvania in das US-Repräsentantenhaus in Washington, D.C. gewählt, wo er am 4. März 1829 die Nachfolge von Charles Miner antrat. Da er im Jahr 1830 auf eine erneute Kandidatur verzichtete, konnte er bis zum 3. März 1831 nur eine Legislaturperiode im Kongress absolvieren, während der er Vorsitzender des Ausschusses zur Kontrolle der Ausgaben des Finanzministeriums war. Seit dem Amtsantritt von Präsident Jackson im Jahr 1829 wurde innerhalb und außerhalb des Kongresses heftig über dessen Politik diskutiert. Dabei ging es um die umstrittene Durchsetzung des Indian Removal Act, den Konflikt mit dem Staat South Carolina, der in der Nullifikationskrise gipfelte, und die Bankenpolitik des Präsidenten.
