Georges Méliès (December 8, 1861 – January 21, 1938), full name Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès, was a French filmmaker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest cinema. He was born in Paris, where his family manufactured shoes.

Georges Méliès nasceu em 8 de dezembro de 1861. Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès foi um ilusionista francês e cineasta famoso por liderar muitas evoluções técnicas e narrativas nos primórdios do cinema. Méliès foi um inovador prolífico (fértil) no uso de efeitos especiais. Méliès descobriu acidentalmente o truque parada (stop trick) em 1896 e foi um dos primeiros cineastas a utilizar exposições variadas (ISO ou ASA), lapso de tempo (time-lapse), efeito de dissolver (dissolve), além da pintura manual de filmes, feitos quadro a quadro (frame to frame). Todas estas técnicas foram apresentadas no filme.
