Mary Ludwig Hays (October 13, 1744 – January 22, 1832) was a woman who fought in the American War of Independence at the Battle of Monmouth. The woman behind the Molly Pitcher story is most often identified as Hays, but it is likely that the legend is an amalgam of more than one woman seen on the battlefield that day.
Historians say that “Molly Pitcher” is a fictional woman who represented the many women working on the battlefields. Yet, there is historical evidence that Mary Ludwig Hays was the real “Molly Pitcher.” Mary Ludwig Hays was born on October 13, 1754.
Mary Hays (1759–1843) was an autodidact intellectual who published essays, poetry, novels and several works on famous (and infamous) women. She was born in 1759, into a family of Protestant dissenters who rejected the practices of the Church of England (the established church). Hays wa…

The Jazz Mary Hays Weik was a disappointment. I probably expected too much from it. When I read about the very short book, I thought that it sounded like a children's version of the James Baldwin short story "Sonny's Blues." "Sonny's Blues" is a marvelous story set in Harlem about a man who lives in his music.

The children are as well-written as the adults, each frayed a bit around the edges and more real for it.
