A hidden gem surrounded by housing developments and major highways, Oscar Scherer plays an invaluable role in the preservation of Florida scrub-jay habitat. Bald eagles nest here in the winter, and in the summer Lake Osprey attracts anglers and swimmers.
Oscar Scherer State Park contains one of the few regionally significant populations of the endangered Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) in Southwest Florida, and is an essential component in the local preservation of the species. Oscar Scherer State Park is located in Osprey, FL, which is just outside of Sarasota. If you are coming from the north on i75, you will get off in exit 200, heading west on FL-681. Once you get to US-41, you will head north until you find the entrance to the park.
Oscar Scherer State Park is in Osprey, Florida which is on the the west coast of Florida just south of Sarasota. Florida has many magnificent, well-maintained state parks. Oscar Scherer is perhaps the best located State Park in Florida. Outside the gates are every possible amenity including a short drive to world famous St. Armand Circle. We camped at Oscar Scherer State Park in a Travel Trailer.
We decided to try a new place for tent camping over Labor Day weekend and came to Oscar Scherer. The campsites are a lot smaller than we are used to. We reserved site 8, and it was a tight fit for two tents and two cars. After scoping out the campground, we'd pick sites 18 and 19, which are large and have above-creek views, or site 86.
Oscar Scherer State Park Overview. Oscar Scherer State Park Campground has 108 campsites and is located along South Creek and near Lake Osprey in the Tampa area. There are 104 campsite with water & electric hookups, 4 tent-only (walk-to) sites and group camping available. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate.
The Haunted Trails at Oscar Scherer State Park will be a drive through haunt this year. An event that is fun for the whole family. Featuring multiple stations along the parks dark road filled with props and plenty of scare. If you make it to the end of the road, Nokomis Fire Department will be there to show you the exit.
For many years Oscar Scherer State Park has hosted numerous fishing contests, the Kiwanis Fishathon being an annual event. The boardwalk will allow fishermen to take advantage of the deeper waters of the lake.
Oscar Scherer State Park’s land is one of the last pieces of acreage inhabited by scrub-jays and the only protected population of this fearless bird in southwest Florida. While not as expansive as Myakka River State Park, Oscar Scherer State Park is no “light-weight” preserve. And they like to stay involved with the community at Oscar Scherer State Park and they do that through a number of annual special events that bring the crowds out to the park in Osprey.

OSCAR SCHERER STATE PARK . HISTORY In 1955, Elsa Scherer Burrows bequeathed 462 acres of land to the state of Florida for use as a park. The land was donated in memory of her father, Oscar Scherer, an inventor who developed a process for dyeing leather for shoes in 1872.
